Putting it into perspective

When you're sitting at home and perform a search, or perhaps request a website by typing a web site address into your web browser, the information is sent to, and received from a server. The computer that makes a request to a server is called a 'client' (like the one you're using now). Servers and clients communicate to each other in languages called 'protocols'. The World Wide Web uses its own protocol; it's called 'hypertext transfer protocol' (http). That's right, the web browser that you used to get to this web site has an address bar where you type a web site’s name ‘http://www.websiteaddress.com'. Protocols are the fundamental principle of how the World Wide Web operates and communicates. Emailing and File Transferring also use their own type of protocol (Internet language).
