What happens when I reach my Usage - Download Limit
When choosing a Broadband Plan one of its specific conditions will cover additional data usage (exceeding your usage/download limit). It is very important that you understand these conditions as exceeding your download limit may incur expensive extra charges. There are usually one, two, or three possibilities that you are presented with:
**Extra Charges:** Your Provider charges additional fees that are usually calculated from extra Megabytes downloaded after monthly limit is exceeded. Fees between 5c – 15c per Megabyte exceeded are common. Some plans may have a ‘Price Cap’ option but will not slow your speed once limit is reached. This will vary depending on which Provider you choose and or specific Plan conditions. It’s very important that you read ‘all the fine print’ or ask customer service about these options prior to signing up. Providers may also send an email warning when close to reaching your limit. It is highly recommended for frequent Internet users that you monitor your monthly limit, as the extra charges could be extremely high.
**Here’s an example:** Monthly Price $29.95; Download Limit 500 Megabytes; Additional Megabytes breached 350 (Total 850 for Month); extra charges incurred @ 15c per Megabyte ($52.50) Total $82.45 Monthly charge.
**E.g. 2 (with Price Cap):** Monthly Price $29.95; Download Limit 500 Megabytes; Additional Megabytes breached 350 (Total 850 for Month); extra charges incurred @ 15c per Megabyte ($20.00 capped) Total $49.95 Monthly charge.
**Speed Limiting:** Your Provider reduces the speed of your Broadband connection once you’ve exceeded the monthly download limit.
E.g. You have a 1500k/256k ADSL connection & 10 GB Monthly limit. Once the 10 GB limit is reached, your Provider may slow your connection to a 64k/64k connection speed. This option is normally free of any charges and possibly the best option to take.
**Extra Charges & Speed Limiting:** Extra charges without a Price cap can really hurt the hip pocket. Some Providers have introduced both Extra charges & Speed limiting options that sometimes may include a Price cap.
**Here’s an example:** You have a 1500k/256k ADSL connection & 10 GB monthly limit. Speed is reduced to 56k/56k after reaching limit hence extra data obtainable has been limited by slower speed therefore you have only exceeded limit by 100 Megabyte. At 15c per MB, an extra $15 will be charged on top of your monthly fee. Perhaps this option is next best to Speed limiting without charges.
