About Satellite Broadband
Satellite Broadband is an alternative method of Broadband Internet that is largely used in areas with limited broadband access. Many remote locations, such as a vessel out at sea and for use in isolated rural communities, are prime candidates for satellite Internet services. The major benefit of satellite broadband access is the fact that it’s practically obtainable no matter where you live. Satellite Broadband can extend into areas that are not serviced by fixed line or Mobile Broadband. At present, the most popular Satellite Broadband products come in One-way and Two-way satellite Internet plans.
There are of course drawbacks with Satellite Broadband access. These range from the basic expense attached to Satellite Broadband installation and the Satellite Broadband hardware (E.g. Satellite Dish) required for receiving such a service. Weather elements such as heavy rains and moisture can also play a big part with broadband reception due to the frequencies used in satellite broadband technology. Another obstacle that can affect Satellite Broadband reception is ‘Line of sight’. This essentially requires the Satellite dish to be properly aligned with the Satellite. Latency is another issue which slows the signal to the satellite and back, thus contributing to transmissions delays.
Although there are many obstacles to be aware of if you’re considering Satellite Broadband, at the same time, there is also Government assistance and some technological solutions that can facilitate a satellite broadband subscription. Australians residing in regional and rural areas of the country could be eligible for a Broadband subsidy offered by the Federal Government titled ‘Broadband Guarantee’. This initiative has gone through many changes over the past couple of years so it’s best to check with your prospective Satellite Broadband Provider to see if it’s still available. There is also constantly new hardware and software becoming available that can reduce latency and improve other complications that Satellite Broadband brings, so be sure to ask the respective agencies about them.
In the short term, it appears that Satellite Broadband will continue to prove to be an alternative type of Broadband that will ‘plug’ the broadband blackspots that other types of broadband cannot patch. We expect Fibre and Mobile broadband technology to head the forefront of the broadband Industry for popular residential broadband for some time to come. However, if (or when) new Satellite technology emerges we may witness another swing in broadband delivery methods again, although we suspect this will be quite some time away yet.
