A Broadband Guide for Renters

We understand that renting can be quite expensive for most, especially as the cost-of-living keeps increasing around Australia. While there are heaps of tips that can be found online on the best way to save money when renting, broadband is oftentimes a commodity that does not get spoken about a lot.

Unlike owning a house, renting does carry a level of uncertainty around it due to the month-to-month condition of living. Therefore, when you are trying to find the right broadband plan for you, you may need to consider a few different factors.

With these broadband plans also comes the hidden up-front cost of having to purchase a modem and installation, which can greatly increase your early spendings. However, beyond the first month, the price of your connected internet will only be the cost of your agreed plan per month.

BROADBAND TYPES

There are four main types of broadband connections that you will have to decide between for the time being. Three are fixed-line connections: the NBN, ADSL2+ or Cable, with the fourth being a Wireless Broadband connection. Of course, the current plan is that in the future, the NBN will replace both ADSL and Cable options, leaving only that and Wireless as the only two options remaining.

Your rented dwelling has not yet had the NBN connected and turned on, then you can connect your house up with an ADSL or Cable plan. Though, keep in mind that the NBN will be replacing existing Cable & ADSL connections once it is turned on. Because of this, it is important to discover what connection your household can run before searching for the right broadband plan.

Most houses should run Cable or ADSL if it has not yet got the NBN connected. Ensure with your landlord that the house does have the internet infrastructure already installed so that you won't have to pay a huge chunk of money to get the cables laid.

If your rented house does not have an existing cable or ADSL internet connection, then you are better off getting a wireless broadband plan instead.

NBN

If the house you are renting has had the NBN connected and turned on, then browse our NBN plans below to find some great deals for you. You can filter the choices based on price, speeds, data usage among other things, so that you can be sure to find the right plan for your household.

NBN plans are typically faster than an ADSL connection, as ADSL2+ can transfer information up to 12Mbps. However there are some NBN plans that also have maximum speeds of 12Mbps, though the majority of plans can reach up to 50Mbps with a select few reaching the upper echelons of 100Mbps.

The speeds are also dependant on which NBN connection type your rented dwelling has connected. Learn about the NBN to discover more about the different types such as fibre-to-the-curb, fibre-to-the-node & more!

Enter your address into the NBN House Checker to see which NBN connection your household has, and then browse the plans below.

ADSL

If your household does not have the NBN, then browse our ADSL2+ plans to find the right ADSL broadband plan for your household. ADSL2+ can reach up to 12Mbps for download speeds, and you can find plans with monthly data usages of 100GB as well as Unlimited plans as well.

CABLE

Cable broadband can reach peak speeds up to 100Mbps, depending on a range of factors, and it also comes in a bundle with a home phone line as well. Telstra and Optus are predominately the two major brands in the Cable broadband deals. If you are after a Cable broadband connection, then browse our Cable plans below.

WIRELESS BROADBAND

If the house you are renting does not support fixed-line internet connections such as ADSL2+, Cable or it does not have the NBN connected to it yet, then there is an alternative option for you.

Wireless broadband or mobile broadband both use the mobile phone towers to transmit wi-fi to existing devices. Consisting of just a router and then having to purchase an additional SIM card on a plan, you will be able to run your home internet using mobile data.

While you can hotspot your mobile phone and run everything off your existing data plan, you may not have enough data to make it through the month without going over the data caps and costing yourself heaps of money.

Plus, another major benefit of getting a wireless broadband plan is that you can take your router and SIM plan anywhere you want. Even if you have to move houses when your lease expires, you won't have to pay anymore than you already do. Simply plug the router with the SIM into your new house and you will have internet!

Have a look at our wireless broadband plans to find some great deals ranging from 70GB of monthly data to unlimited, depending on your price range.

OTHER BROADBAND FACTORS

There are other factors that also come into play when you are trying to find the right broadband plan for your home. Perhaps you are looking for the cheapest deal that you can find? Or maybe you are happy to pay a little bit extra if it means that you get the peace of mind of unlimited internet data without any monthly caps? Or maybe you are not looking for a long-term commitment, and would instead prefer a monthly, no lock-in contract plan? Browse the various plans below to see if you can find what you are looking for.

CHEAP

The main determining factor when you are searching for the right broadband plan may be the cost. Trying to save money wherever you can is vital, and as such, there are a lot of cheap broadband deals out there that are worth considering. We have a range of plans on offer that cost just under $50 a month.

The drawback with some of the lower-cost broadband deals is that they do limit the monthly data usage that your household can consume per month. But that is not to say that there are no unlimited deals, as there may be some on offer.

Have a browse below to see if there are cheap broadband plans there that suit your household's needs.

MONTH-TO-MONTH

Some renters may not have the confidence or security of being in their rented dwelling for long-term. Luckily, there are plenty of month-to-month broadband offers available to you that don't require you to commit to a long-term contract. In fact, some of these month-to-month plans have no lock-in contracts, meaning that you can freely change your plan next month.

That means, if next month you have fallen into financial hardships, you can drop the cost of your plan, and then you can pick it back up again once you are in a better place financially.

It is this flexibility that makes month-to-month plans quite a popular option for renters, who don't always have that security net behind them in terms of finances and steady income streams.

SPEED

Perhaps it isn't the cost of a broadband plan that is an issue for you and your household.  Maybe instead you are after a broadband connection with faster speeds than what you are perhaps receiving. Depending on how fast you want your internet connection to be, the offered plans meeting those speed requirements may cost more.

Browse our higher speed broadband plans below to see if there is a plan there that meets your needs. Plus give us a call at 1300 321 160 and our broadband experts will help you find the right speed-based plan for you.

DATA CAPS

Maybe you are a student who requires a broadband connection with high or unlimited data caps per month. You might need to be able to download lots of references for your reports or essays or for exam study and thus, 100GB per month just does not sound like a lot.

We have plans that do offer up-to unlimited monthly data. While some unlimited plans range from $70 or more per month, you may find some unlimited plans for under $70. Of course, these plans vary depending on what connection your household requires, whether you need an NBN or ADSL plan.

Check out our high-data plans below to see if you can find the right broadband plan for you. Or give us a call at 1300 321 160 and our broadband experts will help you find the right plan with your required data limits.
